Moldova pilots HPV testing for cervical cancer screening

The Republic of Moldova has launched a pilot program to introduce Human Papillomavirus (HPV) testing as a primary method for cervical cancer screening. The initiative, which began in January 2026, is being implemented across ten medical institutions in Chișinău, Bălți, and other regional centers.

Out of 3,030 women tested during the pilot, 184 received positive results. A notable feature of the program is the option for self-sampling, which was utilized by 1,139 participants (37.6%), while 1,891 opted for collection by medical personnel. Authorities noted that interest in self-sampling exceeded expectations, particularly for women in remote areas or those seeking more convenient access.

HPV testing offers a sensitivity rate of approximately 95%, compared to 55% for traditional cytology (the PAP test). This method allows for testing intervals of every three years, whereas negative results in this program may allow for subsequent screening in five years. The program aims to modernize screening, reduce the workload on an aging cytology workforce, and improve detection accuracy.

Health authorities are currently evaluating the cost-effectiveness and the health system's capacity to expand the program nationally. Estimates suggest an annual budget of approximately 10 million MDL could enable 12,000 tests per year, potentially identifying 800 positive cases and reducing long-term treatment costs. The final evaluation will be conducted in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
