Moldova plans administrative reform to decentralize local power

The Moldovan government is preparing an administrative reform aimed at increasing decentralization and local autonomy. Under the proposed structure, the current second-level administrative units, known as districts (raioane), may be renamed or reorganized into 10 or fewer units.

Deputy Secretary General of the Government Alexandru Iacub stated that the reform intends to transfer more competencies and decision-making power to first-level local public administrations, such as town halls. This shift is designed to bring public services closer to citizens and provide strategic support through the new second-level administrative structures.
