Moldova potato wholesale prices remain below retail levels
A significant price gap exists between wholesale and retail potato markets in Moldova. At the Revenko wholesale market in Chișinău, prices reached no more than 4.5 lei per kg, while open-air retail markets maintained prices between 10 and 12 lei per kg. Supermarkets reported prices of 8 to 10 lei per kg.
In Ukraine, wholesale prices for locally grown potatoes averaged US$0.25 per kg, which is approximately 37 per cent lower than the same period last year. In Moldova, wholesale prices ranged from US$0.26 to US$0.29 per kg.
European potato production faces challenges due to summer heatwaves and reduced planting areas. Total output for major growing countries is forecast at 19.5 to 20.5 million tons, a decrease from 27.3 million tons in 2025. Yields in France are reported to be among the lowest in over 30 years, while Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Austria are expected to see yield declines of 30 to 35 per cent compared to last year.
