Moldova President Maia Sandu's Prime Minister Consultations Boycotted by Opposition

President Maia Sandu launched constitutional consultations to name a new prime minister in the Republic of Moldova. All opposition parties in parliament declined to take part, framing the boycott as a political statement. Analyst Nicolae Negru said participation is a legitimate choice and that abstention also sends a message, while stressing that the existing parliamentary majority limits uncertainty about the next government head.

Negru linked the current deadlock to the resignation of former premier Alexandru Munteanu, which he attributed to a dispute over the 2027 fiscal policy, including a proposed VAT increase on medicines that sparked protests from health workers, farmers and the hospitality sector. Potential candidates discussed in the public sphere include interim premier Eugen Osmochescu, Education Minister Dan Perciun, PAS deputy Marcel Spătar, and entrepreneur Vasile Tofan.

The opposition’s demand for early elections adds pressure on the president to consider the parliamentary composition when appointing the next prime minister, underscoring the constitutional balance between the executive and legislative branches.
