Moldova proposes new three-region administrative structure

A draft law regarding the modification of local public administration legislation proposes replacing Moldova’s 32 current districts (raioane) with three administrative regions: Center, North, and South.

Under the new structure, the total number of regional councilors would be 123, a significant reduction from the approximately 1,000 district councilors currently in place. The number of representatives per region will be determined by population: 47 for the Center region, 41 for the North, and 35 for the South.

Regional councilors will be elected by citizens, while regional presidents will be appointed by the councils from among their members. The new administrations will focus on regional economic development, attracting investment, and coordinating projects involving multiple localities, including the management of regional assets and the administration of budgets and EU-funded investment projects.
