Moldova gas tariffs to rise 41% following ANRE approval

The National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) has approved a nearly 41% increase in natural gas tariffs for residential consumers in Moldova. Starting September 1, the price per cubic meter will rise to 20.30 lei (including VAT), up from the current 14.42 lei.

Energocom, the supplier, requested a higher rate of 20.93 lei, citing rising international acquisition costs and significant financial deviations. Interim director Eugeniu Buzatu noted that geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have contributed to these rising costs. ANRE officials stated the adjustment is necessary to ensure the supplier has sufficient resources to meet national demand during the upcoming winter season.

The decision has sparked significant political and social backlash. Chișinău Mayor Ion Ceban criticized the government, arguing that while energy and fuel prices rise, promised wage increases and subsidies remain unfulfilled. He accused the ruling party of creating the economic crisis through poor fiscal policy.

Protests were held in front of the ANRE headquarters by civil society groups, including the 'Construim Încredere' movement, and various political figures. Demonstrators demanded greater transparency regarding Energocom’s procurement processes, including the origin of the gas and transport costs. Some activists have called for the suspension of VAT on natural gas to alleviate the financial burden on households.
