Moldova Railway CFM Receives Over 421 Million Lei Capital Boost
The Moldovan government approved an allocation of more than 421 million lei (about €21 million) to increase the share capital of the state railway company Calea Ferată din Moldova (CFM). The funds, drawn from commitments under projects financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank, are earmarked exclusively for infrastructure work, notably the rehabilitation of the Tighina–Basarabeasca–Etulia–Giurgiulești line, and cannot be used for the company's operating expenses.
Vice‑prime minister and infrastructure minister Vladimir Bolea said the investment marks a major step for the rail network and enhances Moldova’s role in the Black Sea region. Prime minister Vasile Tofan highlighted the strategic importance of grain transit from Ukraine, estimating that a $10 per tonne fee could generate up to $60 million in revenue for the railway. Between February 2022 and September 2023, CFM earned roughly one billion lei from Ukrainian grain exports.
