Moldova ranks fifth in Council of Europe for ECHR convictions

The European Court of Human Rights issued 48 judgments against the Republic of Moldova in 2025, placing the country fifth among Council of Europe members for the number of convictions. The court identified 73 violations of the European Convention on Human Rights, most frequently concerning the right to a fair trial (33 breaches), followed by property protection (21 breaches) and privacy rights.

Moldova was ordered to pay approximately eight million lei in compensation. The judgments also included, for the first time, a finding of violation of the prohibition of slavery and forced labour. Other infringements involved inadequate investigation of crimes, delayed execution of judgments, and insufficient procedural safeguards for vulnerable complainants. The report, presented on 7 July 2026 to the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee, highlights persistent structural problems in the Moldovan justice system.
