Moldova records 21 domestic‑violence deaths in 2025, nine criminal prosecutions launched

In 2025, the Republic of Moldova registered 71 domestic‑violence incidents that resulted in 21 deaths – 14 women and seven men. The cases involved both male (53) and female (15) perpetrators.

A total of 68 serious or particularly serious incidents led to nine criminal cases being opened. Victim analysis shows 45 women (including 14 deaths and six attempted murders) and 26 men (seven deaths and three attempted murders). Femicide accounted for 93% of female deaths, and women comprised almost two‑thirds of all victims.

The figures, presented in the report of the specialized commission of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, note a decline in the absolute number of femicide cases compared with 2023‑2024 and 2022, but the proportion of female victims remains high. The commission’s role is to identify risk factors and recommend preventive and response measures.
