Moldova records rise in exclusive breastfeeding but sees shorter overall duration

In 2024, almost half of children in the Republic of Moldova were exclusively breastfed during the first six months of life, according to data released by the national statistics agency. More than seven out of ten mothers initiated breastfeeding, indicating a strong start to infant nutrition.

Despite the increase in early exclusive breastfeeding, the average total duration of breastfeeding has declined, with fewer mothers continuing to nurse beyond the recommended period. Health officials highlighted the need for sustained support to maintain longer breastfeeding practices.

The report calls for enhanced public‑health campaigns and better access to lactation resources to reverse the downward trend in overall breastfeeding length.
