The Economist: Russian military losses could reach 2.1 million

A statistical model published by The Economist estimates that Russian military losses in the war against Ukraine could range between 1.4 million and 2.1 million personnel, including those killed, wounded, or missing. The report suggests that the number of Russian soldiers killed could be as high as 770,000, with a lower estimate of 374,000.

These figures represent a significant increase from previous estimates. In July 2025, the publication estimated between 190,000 and 350,000 deaths. By May 2026, the death estimate had risen to between 280,000 and 518,000. The current model utilizes data from Western intelligence services, defense ministries, and independent researchers, cross-referenced with the publication’s own monitoring of combat intensity and frontline shifts.

The report highlights the growing role of technology, noting that Ukrainian drones have reportedly killed or wounded 302,000 Russian soldiers since the beginning of 2026. Additionally, the Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian losses reached a monthly peak in October, with approximately 49,040 personnel lost, surpassing the previous high in December 2024.
