Moldova reports rise in registered drug users and crime
The Republic of Moldova has seen an increase in the number of drug users registered for medical monitoring. According to data from the Republican Narcology Dispensary, there were 704 new patients in 2025, compared to 545 in 2024. Total registered users now exceed 12,000.
Criminal activity related to drugs is also rising, with 1,387 cases reported in 2025, up from 994 in 2023. Authorities noted that 765 individuals committed drug-related offenses for the first time in 2025. A significant portion of these cases are identified by law enforcement and narcology specialists, while self-referrals for treatment have declined to 3.8% due to social stigma and limited trust in the public system.
Government officials highlighted risks posed by new synthetic drugs and online distribution via messaging applications. In response, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the ‘National Strategy on Drugs and Addictions for 2026–2032’, which aims to improve treatment access, combat trafficking, and address risks associated with alcohol, tobacco, and gambling.
