Fuel prices surge in Moldova and Romania amid supply shifts
Fuel prices are rising sharply across the region. In Moldova, diesel has reached record highs, approaching 36 lei per liter. Economic expert Marin Gospodarenco notes that diesel is currently more expensive than gasoline despite having a much lower excise tax, a discrepancy driven by high international acquisition costs and refining pressures.
Moldova is also diversifying its fuel supply. In the first half of 2026, the share of diesel imported from Romania fell to 53.7% from 76.4% in late 2025, as imports from Turkey and Bulgaria each rose to 15.2%. This shift is attributed to regional refinery closures and global market disruptions caused by conflicts in the Persian Gulf.
In Romania, major providers like Petrom have increased diesel prices, pushing them toward the 11 lei threshold. These increases are linked to global volatility and risks to major oil transit routes, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. Consequently, intercity transport costs in Moldova have also risen, with rates adjusted to 1.16 lei per kilometer.
