Moldova reports growth in freight and passenger transport
Data from the National Bureau of Statistics of Moldova indicates significant growth in the freight transport sector for the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. The volume of goods transported increased by 20.6%, while the turnover of freight transport rose by 14.4%. Road transport remains the dominant mode, accounting for 87.1% of all goods moved, with 8.9 million tons transported via road.
In contrast, rail transport saw a 23.2% increase in volume. However, air transport experienced a sharp decline, with both volume and transport duration falling by 53.6% and 57.0%, respectively. Internal fluvial transport also saw a decrease of 31.0%.
Regarding passenger transport, the number of passengers moved via public transport increased by 2.2%, totaling 167.9 million people. This growth was driven by electric transport (+3.1%) and road transport (+0.9%). Conversely, passenger numbers fell significantly in the rail (-63.1%), fluvial (-26.6%), and air (-1.3%) sectors. Total passenger kilometers saw a marginal decrease of 0.1%.
