Moldova State Tax Service confirms 85,000 road tax notifications are authentic

The State Tax Service (SFS) of Moldova has confirmed the authenticity of approximately 85,000 notifications sent to vehicle owners regarding the 2026 road tax. This clarification follows online speculation that the documents might be fraudulent.

The notifications, sent via Poșta Moldovei, target owners of vehicles that underwent technical inspections between June 1 and December 31, 2025, and are subject to inspections every two years. The SFS emphasized that the road tax must be paid annually, regardless of the frequency of technical inspections.

Each notification includes the vehicle's identification number (VIN), year of manufacture, and the amount due for 2026. To facilitate payment, the documents feature a QR code for the MPay electronic service. The total calculated tax amount across all notifications is approximately 102.6 million lei. Owners who have already paid the 2026 tax may ignore the notice, and in cases of vehicle sales, the obligation to pay falls to the new owner if it was not settled at the time of the transaction.
