Moldova study: Corruption cited as main cause of human rights violations
A recent study on human rights perception in the Republic of Moldova reveals that 90% of citizens identify corruption and inadequate access to justice as the primary causes of human rights violations. The findings, presented by the Ombudsman's Office, indicate that while general perceptions of human rights respect have improved over the last decade, significant challenges remain.
According to Ombudsman Ceslav Panico, the percentage of people who believe human rights are better respected has risen from 22% in 2016 to over 50% in 2025. Similarly, the perception of respect for the right to health has increased from 13% to 60% in the same period. Despite this progress, 70% of respondents believe that human rights are still frequently violated.
The study also noted differences in awareness levels. Displaced Ukrainians living in Moldova reported being more informed about human rights than the local population. Among Moldovans, awareness is lower among men, elderly individuals, those with lower education levels, ethnic minorities, and residents of the southern region.
