Moldova targets 5 billion lei in new revenue via e-commerce and sin taxes
The Moldovan Ministry of Finance estimates that new fiscal policies could generate approximately 5 billion lei for the state budget. Finance Minister Victoria Belous stated that a significant portion of these funds will come from taxing packages ordered via international e-commerce platforms, which is expected to contribute about 1 billion lei. This measure aims to create equitable tax conditions for local merchants who already pay VAT, customs duties, and employee-related taxes.
Additionally, the government anticipates roughly 500 million lei from sin taxes, including levies on gambling and tobacco products. Regarding gambling, Belous noted that citizens spend approximately 1 billion lei in this sector and argued that an additional fiscal contribution is not an excessive burden. The ministry also plans to increase taxation on tobacco and electronic cigarettes to both boost revenue and discourage consumption.
