Moldova targets 90% EU law transposition by 2026
Moldova is accelerating its path toward European Union membership, with parliamentary commission president Marcel Spatari stating that the country must transpose over 90% of EU legislation by the end of 2026. If these legislative milestones are met, the EU accession treaty could potentially be signed by 2028. Spatari identified justice reform as the most complex challenge due to the required autonomy of the judicial system.
In a separate legislative development, Moldova is implementing new data protection regulations. Law no. 195, which transposes the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) into national law, is set to take effect on August 23, 2026. The law mandates that organizations collect only necessary data for specific, legal purposes. Violations of these new data protection standards may result in fines reaching up to 2,000,000 lei.
