Moldova: Testimonies recount Soviet-era mass deportations

In the documentary series ‘Busola Memoriei’ aired on Moldova 1, Marcela Ciubotaru, 78, shares her family's history of survival following Soviet mass deportations. In June 1941, the first major deportation operation targeted families in the village of Ciuciuleni, Hâncești district.

Ciubotaru recounts how her grandfather, Ion Cebanu, a former village mayor, chose to remain in his home rather than flee to Romania. During the forced removal, soldiers separated families, using violence against those attempting to stay together.

According to the testimony, over 400 people were deported from Ciuciuleni alone. Men were transported via freight wagons to Siberia, while women and children were sent to Kazakhstan, where they faced extreme hardships.
