Moldova tests exotic crops like kaki and kiwi amid drought

Agricultural authorities in Moldova are testing exotic crops, such as kaki and kiwi, as potential alternatives to traditional corn production. This shift is being considered in response to persistent drought and changing climatic conditions, particularly in the southern regions of the country where water-intensive crops face increasing risks.

Vasile Șarban, State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, noted that while farmers are often hesitant to adopt unfamiliar crops due to the inherent risks, the necessity of adapting to heat and drought may force a change. The testing process is being conducted through the Technical University's Faculty of Agriculture, which has taken over the duties of the state commission for soil and plant testing. Clear recommendations for farmers regarding the cultivation of kiwi and kaki are expected within the next one to two years.
