Moldova implements major education reforms and school reorganizations

The Moldovan government has approved the creation of 34 territorial education agencies to take over the management of primary, gymnasium, high schools, and special education institutions from local authorities. This transition will occur on January 1, 2027, for most regions, while Chișinău and Bălți will transition on January 1, 2028. These agencies will possess legal personality, independent budgets, and will manage human resources, financing, and educational quality.

In a separate development, 92 educational institutions were reorganized ahead of the 2026-2027 school year, resulting in the transfer of 1,932 students. Among these changes, 31 institutions were liquidated and five were merged. The most frequent restructuring involved converting schools into primary-kindergarten combinations to maintain local access for younger children.

Additionally, the Ministry of Education and Research has launched professional training for teachers to implement a new disciplinary curriculum. These 16-hour online workshops are scheduled for November and December 2026 and are mandatory for targeted teaching staff.
