Moldova to introduce new HPV vaccine by year-end

Moldovan authorities plan to introduce a new nonavalent HPV vaccine into the National Immunization Program by the end of this year. This new vaccine will protect against nine types of the Human Papillomavirus, replacing the current tetravalent vaccine that covers four types. Medical experts note that both versions are highly effective as they target the most oncogenic serotypes.

Despite the vaccine being provided free of charge to eligible children and young adults, immunization rates remain below 50%. For children aged 9 to 14, a single dose is administered, while those aged 15 to 26 require two doses. Health officials and medical professionals attribute the low coverage to parental hesitancy, often fueled by misinformation and unverified reports circulating on social media.

Cervical cancer is currently the third most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in Moldova. The initiative aligns with World Health Organization goals to ensure at least 90 percent of girls are vaccinated against HPV by 2030.
