Moldovan authorities dismantle romance scam network

Moldovan law enforcement officials have detained three young individuals and are investigating a fourth in connection with an online romance scam operation. Investigators from the National Investigation Inspectorate and PCCOCS prosecutors allege the suspects used fake social media profiles and dating applications to establish romantic relationships with victims in the United States and the European Union.

The suspects allegedly coerced victims into transferring funds, with preliminary estimates suggesting payments reached approximately $440,000 in a single month. During searches conducted in Chișinău and the Orhei district, authorities seized mobile phones, IT equipment, and $31,900 in cash.

Investigations are ongoing to identify all participants in the scheme and determine the total financial damage. The suspects are presumed innocent until a final judicial decision is reached.
