Padova investigation: Six under scrutiny after Moldovan worker's death

Six people are under investigation in Italy following the death of Nicu Terletchi, a 35-year-old Moldovan worker who died on a construction site in the province of Padova on August 4.

Initial autopsy results suggest Terletchi died from a heart attack or heatstroke, potentially exacerbated by extreme temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius. The investigation has ruled out alcohol consumption, contradicting earlier claims made by those involved.

Authorities are investigating charges of aggravated omission of assistance. Investigators are examining why emergency services were not alerted immediately after Terletchi fell ill. Reports suggest the delay may have been an attempt to hide the fact that he was working illegally without a contract. Instead of seeking immediate medical help, the victim was reportedly moved to a residence and then transported by relatives in a private vehicle, with emergency services only being contacted after he had already passed away.

Labor unions have described the incident as a ‘social crime,’ highlighting the exploitation of undocumented workers. The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the case through the Consulate in Padova.
