Moldovan deportees' history preserved through personal accounts and artifacts

The history of Soviet-era deportations to Siberia is being preserved through personal testimonies and cultural artifacts in Moldova. Vera Cecan, who was deported at six months old in 1949, shared her experience of surviving the journey in overcrowded freight wagons. During the transit, a passenger managed to signal locomotive mechanics to provide air to the suffocating deportees, a gesture that saved the infant and provided relief to others.

Additionally, the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History in Moldova houses a carpet woven by a woman who was deported to Siberia alongside her six children. The artifact was donated to the museum by Constantin and Vasilița Postică from Chișinău.
