Moldova and Romania: EU integration challenges and road safety enforcement

Moldova is navigating a complex path toward European Union integration, focusing on judicial reform and institutional strengthening to combat corruption. While Moldovan companies like BPM are aligning with EU standards, they face significant new trade barriers. New EU steel safeguard regulations, effective July 2026, are expected to reduce tariff-free quotas by 47% and increase tariffs on excess imports to 50%, a challenge for Moldovan producers who do not currently benefit from the same exemptions as EEA countries. Additionally, the upcoming Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) presents further economic hurdles.

In Romania, law enforcement has conducted several operations targeting road safety. Police in Sibiu and Alba reported multiple drivers caught speeding significantly on the A1 motorway, with some reaching over 200 km/h, resulting in suspended licenses and heavy fines. In Brașov, a large-scale operation targeted commercial vehicle drivers, resulting in numerous sanctions for alcohol consumption and safety violations. Other incidents reported include a multi-car accident in Constanța involving two overturned vehicles and a 22-year-old driver being detained after an accident involving driving under the influence and fleeing the scene. Authorities are also implementing 'red carpet' traffic calming measures in 145 localities to reduce speeding.
