Moldovan farmers protest new grain import licensing law

Moldovan farmers, represented by the association ‘Forța Fermierilor’, are criticizing a newly passed law regarding the licensing of grain and oilseed imports. The primary point of contention is the government's decision to limit the validity of this licensing mechanism until October 31, refusing to include provisions for an extension.

Agricultural representatives argue that the short timeframe fails to account for regional market volatility. They note that grain prices in Ukraine continue to fall as harvesting for corn and sunflower begins, creating downward pressure on the Moldovan market. Farmers contend that because Ukrainian exports via Black Sea ports remain restricted, alternative routes lack the capacity to handle massive volumes, meaning low-priced Ukrainian goods will likely continue to impact Moldova for at least four months.

Opposition lawmakers and farmer advocates have questioned the government's motives for excluding an extension clause, suggesting it may lack strategic vision or could inadvertently favor interests that allow for dumping. The association has warned of potential protests if the mechanism is not extended to protect domestic producers.
