Dumitru Abuzan, a 34‑year‑old man of Moldovan origin living near Bologna, drowned on 30 July 2026 after saving his six‑year‑old daughter and a friend from the strong current of the Po River at Calto, province of Rovigo. The two girls reached the shore safely, but Abuzan was swept away and did not re‑emerge. Rescue operations involved the fire brigades of Castelmassa and Mestre, an emergency helicopter from the Bologna flight department, divers from the regional fire‑fighter unit, the Hydra boat equipped with sonar, Suem 118 medical personnel and local Carabinieri. After about 24 hours of searching, his body was recovered on 31 July around noon and handed over to the medical‑legal authority. The tragedy has renewed attention on the hidden dangers of the Po River during low‑water periods.
