Moldovan health authorities warn of wild mushroom poisoning risks

Health authorities and medical professionals in Moldova are issuing warnings regarding the risks of wild mushroom poisoning following autumn rains. The National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA) advises that some poisonous species closely resemble edible varieties and warns that appearance alone is not a guarantee of safety.

Experts emphasize that common myths—such as using garlic, onions, or silver to detect toxins—have no scientific basis. Furthermore, toxins found in certain mushrooms, such as the lethal viper bolete, cannot be eliminated through boiling, frying, freezing, or pickling.

Medical professionals recommend purchasing mushrooms only from authorized supermarkets and registered markets rather than unauthorized roadside vendors. To avoid heavy metal contamination, foragers are advised against harvesting near roads, railways, or industrial zones. In the event of symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, individuals should immediately contact emergency services via 112.
