Moldovan health specialists warn of wild mushroom poisoning risks
With the wild mushroom harvesting season underway, health specialists in Moldova are issuing warnings regarding the risk of poisoning. Medical professionals advise the public to consume only mushrooms that are identified with certainty and to purchase them from authorized locations or through specialists.
Vasile Odobescu, a doctor from the National Agency for Public Health, noted that symptoms can vary based on the species consumed, the amount of toxin, and the age of the individual. Common symptoms appearing within two hours include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive sweating, and abdominal pain. More severe symptoms, such as headaches, dizziness, hallucinations, loss of consciousness, or coma, may develop after six hours.
Specialists emphasize that children are particularly vulnerable to toxins. Major causes of poisoning include harvesting by inexperienced individuals, purchasing from unauthorized roadside vendors, or improper home preparation. Prompt medical intervention is considered decisive in saving lives, even in cases involving highly dangerous species.
