Moldovan judges launch protest over judicial salary law

Judges in Moldova have initiated a 30-day protest, described as a ‘Japanese-style strike,’ to express dissatisfaction with a proposed new salary law for the justice system. The protest involves wearing white armbands over judicial robes during court sessions without suspending active case proceedings.

Marina Rusu, president of the ‘Voice of Justice’ Association, led a demonstration in front of Parliament to demand higher wages. Rusu criticized the proposed legislation, arguing that inadequate remuneration, excessive workloads, and difficulties in retaining qualified staff undermine the judicial system. She stated that the current salary levels are insufficient to maintain a professional judiciary, noting that even low-skilled roles can offer better pay.

The Association of Judges indicated that the protest is scheduled for an initial period of 30 days, with the possibility of extension depending on how the situation evolves.
