Vasile Tofan’s Government Wins Confidence Vote in Moldova Parliament

On 21 July 2026 Moldova’s 101‑member parliament approved a new government headed by businessman‑turned‑prime‑minister Vasile Tofan. The confidence vote passed with the support of 53 deputies from the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), while opposition parties abstained or voted against. Tofan presented his programme, titled “European Economy, Efficient State”, which stresses reviving the economy, accelerating EU accession, reforming the public sector, strengthening security and improving citizens’ quality of life. Key pledges include cutting the budget deficit by two percentage points by 2029, undertaking tax reform, reducing bureaucracy, privatising at least ten state‑owned companies, stimulating investment in technology and AI, and expanding exports of high‑value‑added goods. The cabinet aims to finalise all EU negotiation clusters in 2026 and sign an accession treaty by the end of 2028. While the programme omits a continuation of energy‑bill compensation schemes, it proposes a more targeted social‑assistance system. Opposition figures such as Chișinău mayor Ion Ceban and deputy Olga Ursu criticised the lack of concrete solutions and warned that the new cabinet may repeat past shortcomings, despite retaining most ministers from the previous government.
