Moldovan opposition initiates suspension procedure for President Maia Sandu

Parliamentary opposition in Moldova has initiated the procedure to suspend President Maia Sandu. A project signed by 46 deputies was officially registered at the Parliament Secretariat on Tuesday, September 29.

Deputy Ion Chicu stated that the initiative is based on allegations that the head of state violated the principle of separation of powers by exercising competencies belonging to other branches of government. Other signatories, including deputies from the ‘Alternativa’ faction, ‘Build the Democracy at Home’ Party, and the ‘Our Party’, cited social, economic, and political issues as further justification for the move.

The registration of the project triggers a parliamentary examination process rather than an immediate suspension. President Sandu has previously rejected such initiatives, characterizing them as actions taken in the interests of Moscow.
