Moldova opposition urges early elections as PAS faces criticism

Leaders of Moldova’s opposition parties have intensified calls for snap elections, accusing the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) of mismanaging the country. Ion Ceban, head of the Alternative National Movement (MAN), said the government treats Moldova “like its own SRL” and condemned reforms imposed without public or expert input. He warned that “we are against the so‑called reforms forced on us, against the way decisions are made and the fact that people have been ignored in these processes.”

The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has approved a proposal by the Alternativa parliamentary faction to hold a consultative referendum on 27 September, but it has asked that the ballot questions be re‑worded.

Former communist leader Vladimir Voronin echoed the criticism, stating that PAS “does not have anyone who can lead the Government” and that the only solution is to organise early parliamentary and presidential elections. He added, “I do not see, in the PAS team, a candidate who could be prime minister and cope with the challenges.”

All three figures argue that early elections are necessary to restore public trust and resolve the country’s political crisis.
