Moldovan Parliament to Hold Public Hearings on Rising Phone and Online Fraud

The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova has scheduled public hearings for 12 June to examine the sharp increase in telephone‑ and online‑based scams. Lawmakers will question senior officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Intelligence and Security Service, the National Data Protection Center, the National Bank, the Financial Market Commission and the National Agency for Electronic Communications, as well as representatives from major banks and mobile operators.

Deputy Radu Marian, chair of the parliamentary committee on economy, budget and finance, said the goal is “to learn more about the scale of the phenomenon, the measures taken by institutions and the solutions that must be undertaken to reduce the magnitude of financial fraud.” Recent police data show over 27 million lei stolen in the last 12 days, 149 reported phone‑fraud cases and more than 2 900 fraud attempts. A high‑profile case involved a 74‑year‑old woman from Chișinău who lost more than €130 000 after being duped by alleged “clairvoyants.” Authorities urge citizens not to share banking details or verification codes.

The hearings aim to assess existing protective mechanisms, identify vulnerabilities and possibly recommend new legislation to strengthen digital and financial security for Moldovan citizens.
