Moldovan police detain foreign and local scammers in phone fraud netting over 4 million lei

Police in Chișinău arrested four foreign nationals, aged 22 to 26, who pretended to be employees of an electricity company. Using a false meter‑checking pretext they obtained personal data and convinced a victim to transfer more than 120,000 lei. A courier linked to the group collected over 4 million lei through the scheme. In the same period authorities recorded 14 phone‑fraud cases with total losses exceeding 1 million lei and prevented 402 further attempts.

Separately, three young men were detained on suspicion of participating in similar telephone‑scam operations in the capital, which left victims out of more than 600,000 lei. The coordinated police actions highlight a crackdown on organized fraud targeting Moldovan citizens.
