Moldova strengthens EU cooperation to combat drug trafficking and organized crime

Moldova is intensifying its cooperation with the European Union to combat organized crime and drug trafficking. The Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Health, and the European Union Drugs Agency have signed a working arrangement to improve information sharing regarding new psychoactive substances and emerging trafficking trends. This agreement aims to strengthen the National Drug Observatory and establish a national early warning system.

During the 15th EU Security Hub Conference in Chișinău, officials highlighted the rapid evolution of criminal networks, which increasingly utilize encrypted communications, online platforms, and courier services. Experts warned of a significant rise in the consumption of substances like cocaine and ketamine, noting that new, more potent synthetic opioids are being identified across Europe.

In recent law enforcement actions, Moldovan authorities intercepted approximately 3 kg of alpha-PVP drug hidden in microwave ovens transported from Poland. Additionally, a group involving a justice system employee was targeted in a cocaine trafficking investigation involving sales via Telegram, resulting in the seizure of narcotics valued at 500,000 lei and significant amounts of cash. The General Prosecutor's Office is also working with Eurojust and Europol to enhance cooperation against corruption and complex financial crimes linked to organized crime.
