Moldovan police warn of phone scams targeting elderly women, losses exceed 1 million lei

Police in Moldova reported a wave of telephone‑fraud incidents over a 24‑hour period. A 55‑year‑old woman from Cahul was duped into taking a bank loan and three micro‑loans, losing more than 300,000 lei; the total damage from the frauds recorded that day topped one million lei.

In the capital’s Rîșcani sector, a 77‑year‑old woman was convinced that her electricity meter was being replaced and transferred 923,000 lei in two instalments to couriers. Police have documented 17 similar scams in the same timeframe and prevented 236 further attempts. Authorities urge citizens not to disclose banking data or passwords by phone and to verify any such requests with their banks or the police.
