Moldovan Government Targets High Public Sector Salaries
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan announced a new package of measures to verify very high salaries in the public sector. The government analysed data from 125 public institutions, focusing on figures from the State Tax Service, and identified 439 employees receiving net monthly incomes above 50,000 lei. Tofan said, “Cu siguranță împărtășesc revolta moldovenilor apropo de salariile nesimțite,” and pledged to present a series of measures by 31 July to curb the excesses. While the current review does not include the state-owned company MoldovaGaz, the prime minister indicated that it will be examined in a subsequent package.
President Maia Sandu commented on the difficult start of the new government but expressed confidence that it “se descurcă bine” and stressed the need for public support and stability to implement reforms. She also addressed the salary scandal at the state enterprise Moldatsa, describing the payments as “o generozitate extraordinară” and calling for detailed scrutiny of the figures.
The announced actions aim to bring greater transparency and fairness to public sector remuneration and are expected to lead to further legislative or administrative steps in the coming weeks.
