Moldovan Prime Minister proposes relocating Prison No. 13

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan has proposed relocating Prison No. 13 from central Chișinău to the outskirts of the capital to better utilize the high-value land. During a government meeting, Tofan noted that the current site occupies some of the most expensive real estate in the city, with land values estimated between 50,000 and 100,000 euros per are.

The Prime Minister suggested that once the facility is moved, the land could be developed into a hotel or office buildings to generate state revenue. The plan involves replacing the 19th-century facility with a new institution capable of holding over 1,000 inmates, located near the Bubuieci commune. The project is slated for relaunch in 2026 following the termination of a previous contract.
