Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan Accused of Corrupt Bank Share Deal

Businessman Veaceslav Platon, who is seeking political asylum in the United Kingdom, posted on Telegram that Prime Minister Vasile Tofan was involved, together with former political leader Vladimir Plahotniuc, in a scheme to acquire a controlling stake in Moldova Agroindbank at a price far below its estimated value. Platon claims the shares, which he values at at least €150 million, were purchased for about €15 million and alleges that representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development were also involved. The prime‑minister’s office said the government would not comment on the allegations.

In a separate development, after Tofan said on television that Plahotniuc “will go to prison,” Plahotniuc’s lawyer Lucian Rogac warned that the remarks breach the presumption of innocence and constitute interference with the judicial process. The accusations have not been confirmed by any court decision.
