Moldovan trade unions propose minimum wage increase to 8,000 lei

Social partners in Moldova met at the Government on September 14, 2026, to discuss several critical economic issues, including the minimum wage, taxation, and healthcare staffing shortages.

Representatives from the National Confederation of Trade Unions of Moldova (CNSM) are advocating for a minimum wage increase to approximately 8,000 lei, effective January 1, 2027. This proposal aims to align national standards with EU Directive 2022/2041, which recommends that the minimum wage represent 50% of the average economic salary. While some calculations suggest a figure closer to 8,700 lei to meet EU benchmarks, a compromise around 8,000 lei is being discussed to ensure a decent standard of living amidst rising costs.

Negotiations also addressed the need for salary increases in the education and healthcare sectors to combat inflation and staff shortages. Additionally, unions are seeking to maintain income tax exemptions for trade union and employer organizations under the tax code.
