Moldovan transgender activist seeks legal identity recognition

Nicholas Țurcanu, a transgender young man in Moldova, is fighting for the right to possess identity documents that accurately reflect his name and gender identity.

While Moldovan legislation requires a sex change certificate to modify official documents, there is currently no clear legal procedure or institution capable of issuing such a certificate. This legal gap has forced Țurcanu to delay his university studies by two years in hopes of resolving his documentation status. He previously filed a lawsuit against the Public Services Agency after they refused to amend his documents to match his identity.
