Moldova's Onițcani Village Faces Loss of Springs Amid Funding Gap

The village of Onițcani in Moldova’s Criuleni district, nicknamed the “valley of 100 springs,” is at risk of losing its unique water sources. While officials have officially recorded around 30 springs, experts believe the true number could approach a hundred. Local residents have been maintaining the springs themselves, but drying conditions and insufficient repair work threaten their continued flow.

Mayor Igor Dodon says a large‑scale project involving external investment and partnerships with EU members such as Poland, Belgium and Romania is needed to protect and develop the springs. He has visited Brussels to explore cooperation. Authorities stress that the springs are of national hydrological value and could become a focal point for rural and balneary tourism if properly restored and promoted.
