Moldova President Maia Sandu nominates Vasile Tofan as prime minister

President Maia Sandu announced the nomination of 44‑year‑old financier Vasile Tofan as candidate for prime minister of the Republic of Moldova, following the abrupt resignation of Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu on 3 July. Tofan, senior partner at the investment firm Horizon Capital and a Harvard Business School graduate, was proposed by the governing Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), which controls 55 of the 101 seats in parliament.

Under the constitution, Tofan has 15 days to submit a government programme and a cabinet list to the Parliament, after which a vote of confidence must be secured. He outlined three core priorities: restoring public trust, reviving the economy, and accelerating Moldova’s European Union accession, aiming to sign an EU‑membership agreement by the end of 2028. Tofan said he will ensure continuity in the current administration and will not make sweeping cabinet changes.

PAS leader Igor Grosu praised the shared objectives of EU integration, anti‑corruption reforms and economic growth. Opposition parties boycotted the consultation meetings, but PAS’s parliamentary majority makes the appointment likely to be approved.
