Moldova President Maia Sandu initiates talks to name new prime minister

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu resigned on 3 July, prompting President Maia Sandu to appoint Economic Development Minister Eugen Osmochescu as acting prime minister on 7 July. Sandu then scheduled consultations for 10‑11 July with all parliamentary factions to nominate a candidate for the permanent prime‑minister post and to form a new government.

The ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) holds a parliamentary majority, while several opposition groups – the Party of Socialists (PSRM), the Communists, the Alternative bloc and others – announced they will boycott the consultations. Opposition leaders have called for early elections or a broader, consensus‑based government. Potential candidates discussed by PAS include Education Minister Dan Perciun and entrepreneur Vasile Tofan. The outcome will determine Moldova’s next executive leadership and its EU‑integration agenda.
