Moldova's Spitalul Raional Ștefan Vodă Faces Hygiene Scandal with Frogs and Rats

A patient filmed the infectious diseases ward of Spitalul Raional Ștefan Vodă and captured frogs crawling across the floor and sightings of rats, prompting concerns over sanitation in the public hospital. The video, shared on social media, highlighted unsanitary conditions that allegedly prevented basic personal hygiene for patients and their children.

Moldova's Health Minister Alexandru Gasnaș acknowledged the footage, stating that the images have been forwarded to the ministry and that an inspection of the facility has been ordered. He called for immediate remedial action by the hospital administration and announced plans to develop systemic solutions for the financing and organization of the health system to prevent similar incidents. The incident follows a previous scandal at the Spitalul Clinic Bălţi, where poor conditions in the food preparation area led to the dismissal of then‑Health Minister Emil Ceban’s appointee and a pledge for a complete renovation.
