Moldova's Stroke Care Network Lowers Mortality as Fast Symptom Recognition Emphasized
Stroke (AVC) remains a leading public‑health problem in the Republic of Moldova, with 10,000‑12,000 cases recorded each year and mortality several times higher than the EU average. Since 2023 the country has operated a network of 13 specialised stroke centres, which has halved the time between symptom onset and treatment.
According to neurologist Eugeniu Mindrigan, the faster response has reduced the mortality rate from 163 to 124 patients per 100,000 inhabitants. He stressed that recognising key signs—sudden severe headache, facial asymmetry, limb weakness, speech disturbances, or loss of consciousness—and calling the emergency service 112 immediately can be the difference between life, disability, or death. Prevention through a healthy lifestyle, chronic‑disease control, regular physical activity and periodic medical checks is also highlighted as essential to further lower stroke risk.
The health authorities argue that continued public education and rapid access to treatment are vital for cutting the number of cases and related disabilities.
