Moldova's Transnistrian Region Keeps 77% Export Share to EU

In the first half of 2026, agencies in Moldova’s Transnistrian region directed 76.9% of their exports to European Union member states, matching the level recorded for January‑June 2025. The main EU destinations were Romania, Italy and Slovakia, while imports into the region came largely from Ukraine, the EU and China, accounting for 41.5% of total inbound goods.

The Moldovan Ministry of Finance has drafted a proposal, now in public consultation, to require Transnistrian economic agents to pay value‑added tax (VAT) and excise duties on certain goods entering Moldova beginning 1 August 2026. Officials describe this as the first step toward customs uniformity and a means to reinforce the region’s economic alignment with EU standards, supporting Moldova’s broader reintegration objectives. “The EU remains the most important external market for the business environment in the region,” the Office for Reintegration Policies said.
