Molecular mechanism identified to help plants withstand heat
Researchers have identified a molecular mechanism that helps plants manage high temperatures by maintaining open stomata. A study published in Nature Plants focused on the model organism Arabidopsis thaliana, revealing that a protein called UBP24 plays a critical role in this process.
When temperatures rise, a regulatory protein stabilizes UBP24 through a chemical modification. This allows the protein to act on a cell membrane proton pump, which promotes the opening of stomata—the microscopic pores on leaf surfaces. While opening stomata leads to water loss through evaporation, it also enables the plant to cool itself.
This mechanism helps plants balance the dilemma between conserving water and preventing overheating. Understanding this pathway is significant for developing heat-resistant crops as heatwaves become more frequent and intense, directly impacting photosynthesis, growth, and plant survival.
